The Makarov Pistol Shoots The 9 x 18 Makarov Cartridge which is slightly
more powerful than the .380 cartridge used in the Walther pocket pistols. The
Makarov evolved from Czech and German Walther pocket pistols which were popular in the
1930's.

WARNING
Firearms Are Inherently Dangerous And Should Only Be Handled By Persons Trained In Proper
Safety Techniques. Take A Proper Safety Class Before Handling Any Firearm.
1. ASSUME ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS
LOADED
2. KEEP YOUR FINGER STRAIGHT AND OFF THE TRIGGER
3. NEVER LET GUN POINT AT ANYTHING YOU DON'T WANT TO KILL OR DESTROY - DEAD IS A FOREVER
DEAL
4. BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEHIND IT. BULLETS TEND TO MISS, RICOCHET, AND FALL
FROM THE SKY AS DEADLY AS WHEN THEY LEFT THE BARREL. |

http://www.makarov.com is a great site to learn more
about these great guns. Many add-ons and grips are available although I prefer the
Makarov as it comes. The site is also a good place to try different grips or find
original grips if you gun came with thumb-wing target grips that aren't generally liked.

The Makarov Pistol is a great
gun. Slightly smaller than a .38 special, the gun is accurate, dependable,
convenient beyond belief and a great comfort as a personal defense weapon. It's
smooth and won't snag clothing and although it's a Soviet design pistol, so much of it is
copied from earlier German and Czech designs that it still looks really really cool.
Comparing the Makarov to the Walther PPK, I would have to say that the Makarov is
"Ten Times The Gun At One Tenth The Price". Do the math and you will
agree.
Shooting The Makarov
Shooting the Makarov takes a
few tricks to remember that may differ from other guns. First, always make sure the safety
lever is ALL THE WAY down before firing. I've seen a couple guns where the safety could
wiggle up just a hair causing the hammer to be blocked from hitting the firepin.
Forcing the safety down hard to "fire", when this occured corrected the
condition.
As far as accuracy goes, the
gun is very accurate as it incorporates a fixed barrel design. I've always shot 45's
fairly well by paying attention to pressure points in my hand resting solidly against the
gun. The Makarov ergonomics may require a different method.
Pressure Point 1. Inside of thumb - bone presses firmly inward against gun frame
Pressure Point 2. Index Finger top knuckle (where finger attaches to hand) firmly against
frame
Pressure Point 3. Heel of hand presses against bottom of pistol grip - DON'T DO POINT-3
WITH THE MAKAROV
With the Makarov, for accracy shots, try holding it like a cup of tea with the heel
of the hand not pressing against the grip. It might feel like the gun is floating a bit,
but this seems to prevent some twisting of the gun as the trigger gets squeezed.
